Both thought and thew now bolder
And told by Nature: Tower;

The vault and scope and schooling
And mastery in the mind,
In silk-ash kept from cooling,
And ripest under rind—
What life half lifts the latch of,
What hell stalks towards the snatch of,
Your offering, with despatch, of!

Morgen-, Mittag- und Abendopfer

Flecken, die Schmachten blies
auf die Wange, und den Mäander-Mund,
der Locke Gold, das lichte Gries
des Auges, alles in losem Bund,
all dieser Schönheit Sporen,
alles, was Tauglanz beschworen,
gib Gott hin, es ist zum Opfer erkoren.

Beide, Sinn und Sehne, kühne Brücken
und nach der Natur Geheiß: nun Turm.
Haupt, Herz, Hand, Fuß und Rücken,
sie pochen und atmen Lebenssturm.
Dies Prunken in der Gipfel Hochgefühl,
dir gereich es zum Werk und nicht zum Spiel,
Christus zu dienen sei das Ziel.

Wölbung, Bahn und Weisung
und Geistes hohe Zucht,
Aschen-Seide barg ihn vor Vereisung,
unter Schalen reifte volle Frucht –
wovon das Leben schon den Riegel schiebt,
wonach der Höllenschlund zu schnappen liebt,
dein Opfer, das sich ohne Zögern gibt!
