Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,

The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,

To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.

Ein Gebet im Frühling

O, gib uns Freude an den Blumen hier.
Mach, daß unser Sinn sich nicht verlier
an Ernten, die noch ungemäht. Verwahr
uns schlicht im aufgeblühten Jahr.

O, gib uns Freude an der Blütenpracht,
so hell bei Tag, gespenstisch in der Nacht.
Laß uns im Glück der Bienen glücklich sein,
Schwarm, um Bäume schweifend, ursprungsrein.

Gib uns vom Glück des Vogels, der da schwirrt,
und plötzlich überm Bienenvolke sirrt,
der Meteor, die Nadel Schnabel treibt er ein,
und vor der Blüte schwebt er, schwereloser Stein.

Denn dies ist Liebe, und Liebe ist nur dies,
was Gott allein gebührt im Paradies,
sie heiligt, was zum guten End Er will,
doch unser Herz sei Quelle, die ihm quill.
