Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

 

Feuer und Eis

Der meint, die Welt vergeht im Feuer,
und der, im Eis.
Ein unersättlich Ungeheuer,
mein Geist, er schreit nach Feuer.
Doch soll sie zweifach gehn zugrund,
gibt mir der Haß, der alte, recht,
erfrieren in eisblauem Schlund
ist auch nicht schlecht,
ja wär profund.
