Mistah Kurtz—he dead.

A penny for the Old Guy.

I

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

II

Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death’s dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind’s singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.

Let me be no nearer
In death’s dream kingdom
Let me also wear
Such deliberate disguises
Rat’s coat, crowskin, crossed staves
In a field
Behaving as the wind behaves
No nearer—

Not that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom

III

This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man’s hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Is it like this
In death’s other kingdom
Waking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Form prayers to broken stone.

IV

The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death’s twilight kingdom
The hope only
Of empty men.

V

Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o’clock in the morning.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Die hohlen Menschen

Mistah Kurtz – er tot.

Einen Pfennig für den alten Kerl.

I

Wir sind die hohlen Menschen,
wir sind nur ausgestopft
und lehnen Kopf an Kopf,
die strohgefüllten. O je!
Unsere trocknen Stimmen,
flüstern wir uns was zu,
sind leise und ausdruckslos,
wie der Wind im trockenen Gras
oder wie Ratten trippeln über zerbrochnes Glas
in unserem trockenen Keller.

Gedunsene Gestalt, farbloser Schatten,
saftlose Kraft, verwackelte Geste.

Ihr, die ihr wachen Auges
des Todes anderes Reich betratet,
gedenket unser – nur nicht als verloren-
roher Seelen, sondern einzig
als der hohlen Menschen,
der ausgestopften Menschen.

II

Augen, die mir angst machen in Träumen,
im Traumreich des Todes
tauchen sie nicht auf:
Dort sind die Augen
Sonnenlicht auf gestürzten Säulen,
dort schwingt ein Baum hin und her,
und im Wind ist Gesang
von Stimmen,
ferner und feierlicher
als ein Stern, der verblaßt.

Haltet mich fern
vom Traumreich des Todes,
leiht mir Masken,
pfiffigen Mummenschanz,
der Ratte Mantel, ein Krähenkleid, gekreuzte Stäbe
in einem Gefild,
wo der Wind sein Winden treibt,
haltet mich fern –

von jenem letzten Treffen
im Reich des Zwielichts.

III

Dies ist das Land der Toten,
das Kakteenland,
hier sind steinerne Bilder
aufgerichtet, hier empfangen sie
Opfer aus eines Toten Hand,
unterm Zittern eines Sternes, der verblaßt.

So heißt es wohl,
in des Todes anderem Reich
einsam wach zu sein,
zur Stunde, da wir beben
vor Zärtlichkeit, und Lippen,
statt zu küssen,
geborstene Steine anbeten.

IV

Hier sind keine Augen,
Augen gibt es hier nicht,
in diesem Tal der sterbenden Sterne,
in diesem hohlen Tal,
diesem gebrochenen Kinn unserer verlorenen Reiche.

An diesem letzten Zufluchtsort
ertasten wir einander
und bleiben stumm,
gelagert am Strand des schwellenden Stroms.

Ohne Sicht, es sei denn,
die Augen tauchen wieder auf,
als ein ewiger Stern,
eine vielblättrige Rose,
in des Todes Zwielicht-Reich
die einzige Hoffnung
leerer Menschen.

V

Hier umkreisen wir den Feigenkaktus,
Feigenkaktus, Feigenkaktus,
hier umkreisen wir den Feigenkaktus,
Schlag fünfe in der Früh.

Zwischen der Idee
und der Wirklichkeit,
zwischen dem Antrieb
und der Tat
fällt der Schatten.
Denn Dein ist das Reich.

Zwischen der Empfängnis
und der Geburt,
zwischen der Erregung
und der Erwiderung
fällt der Schatten.
Das Leben ist verdammt lang.

Zwischem dem Verlangen
und der Verzückung,
zwischen der Möglichkeit
und der Wirklichkeit,
zwischen dem Ursprung
und dem Verfall
fällt der Schatten.
Denn Dein ist das Reich.

Denn Dein ist
Das Leben ist
Denn Dein ist das

Auf diese Weise endet die Welt.
Auf diese Weise endet die Welt.
Auf diese Weise endet die Welt.
Nicht mit einem Knall, sondern einem Wimmern.
