Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Die Wiederkunft

Kreisend und kreisend im klaffenden Schlund
hört der Falke seinen Falkner nicht.
Alles fällt, entgleitet, keine Mitte hält.
Anarchie stürzt auf die Erde los.
Flut dunklen Blutes stürzt und schwemmt
der Unschuld Feier überall hinweg.
Die Edlen lähmt erloschner Glaubenssinn,
Glut der Inbrunst macht die Wilden heiß.

Gewiß, die Offenbarung klopft schon an.
Gewiß, die Wiederkunft steht vor der Tür.
Die Wiederkunft! Kaum ist das Wort gesagt,
verwirrt der Weltgeist mein Gesicht
mit Bildern ungeheuer: wüstes Ödland,
Unform mit Löwenleib und Menschenkopf,
glotzt sonnenstarr und gnadenlos,
regt langsam Schenkel, und sie um-
wirbelt der Wüstenvögel Schattentanz.

Und wieder sinkt die Nacht, doch weiß ich jetzt,
zwanzig Jahrhunderten steinernen Schlafs
brachte Albtraum einer Wiege Lied.
Und welches Biest, die Endzeit-Glocke schlägt,
schleicht zur Geburt nach Bethlehem?
