Somewhere or other there must surely be
The face not seen, the voice not heard,

Somewhere or other, may be near or far;

Da oder dort sind sie versteckt,
der Blick so müd, die Lippen bang,
das Herz, das niemals ich erweckt
mit meinem Sang.

Da oder dort, nah oder fern
ob Land ob Meer, der Sicht entrückt,
wo zieht der Mond, wo folgt der Stern,
von ihm berückt.

Da oder dort, fern oder nah,
ein Zaun davor, ein Wall, der blinkt.
Wo man am welken Laub schon sah,
das Jahr, es sinkt.
